Xander fumed. How dare he threaten his mate! Thankfully Marcus was coming up tomorrow, and they could make a plan. He didnât want to tip Mitchell off that they were coming for her work. He wouldnât let him burn a single canvas. He shot off a text. He wanted his dad and Rhett in town as soon as possible.
While all the men were scouting the area, he would take Roxie around for a day in the city. He knew sheâd lived close when married to Mitchell, but he had a sneaking suspicion she rarely came into the city. She probably came for art shows and nothing else. He was excited to see the city with her. He didnât come here often because of Mitchell. They had never gotten along when at art exhibitions. Mitchell saw him as competition and he would stake his reputation on him being pissed he stole Roxie. Seeing responses from both his dad and Rhett, he fell asleep worrying about his mate.
He awoke the next morning to an empty bed. He sat up quickly, scanning the room for his love. When he spotted the balcony doors open, he got up, tossed on his boxers, and went outside. She was sitting at a miniature easel with a small canvas in front of her. He watched her paint the city with the sunrise behind it. Her strokes were sure, and he could see the piece coming along. Leaning against the door, he stayed silent as she worked. He loved watching her. She would scrunch up her button nose when she contemplated what color to use next.
âI know you are there,â she remarked, not looking away from her work.
âOf course, you do,â he chuckled. Sheâd only had her dragon for a week but had learned to hone her senses quickly. He bent and kissed her cheek.
âHow long have you been up?â he asked, sitting next to her.
âSince four. Mitch is a dangerous man, and I read the letter. How the hell are we going to get my work now?â She set her brush down and angrily wiped away a tear. He pulled her into his lap, not caring that she got paint on his bare chest.
âI have a plan. Trust me and everything will work out. I have everyone coming up to meet us in an hour. We will enjoy our day like normal and the guys will put our plan into action,â he explained.
âI donât know if I can pull off acting normal,â she murmured.
âThat is where I come in. We have a full day planned out, starting at the Delicious Spa for a coupleâs massage. We have lunch at Gramercy Tavern, window shopping around Times Square, dinner at Bemelmans Bar, and the Broadway play Hamilton to finish out our day.â
âThat is a full day. Iâm not sure Iâll be able to keep up,â she laughed, and he nipped at her neck. âNo marks. I donât have makeup with me to cover them,â she warned, and it made him want to leave one even more.
